HOUSTON – May 1, 2025 – The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit focused on patient safety, driven in the Houston metroplex by the Houston Business Coalition on Health (HBCH), today released its Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Grade. In the Houston area 43 hospitals were graded, and 12 (28%) earned an A, 23 (53%) earned a B, and eight (19%) earned a C. No Houston area hospital earned a D or F grade.
The grade uses over 30 measures including rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, and whether hospitals have systems in place to prevent them. The biannual Safety Grade is an A, B, C, D or F assigned to all general hospitals in the United States based on their ability to protect patients and give the community critical insight about local hospitals.
For the first time, Leapfrog is spotlighting the 346 hospitals nationwide that not only achieved an A for spring 2025 but sustained the grade for more than two years. This select group, representing 12% of all eligible hospitals, is now highlighted on hospitalsafetygrade.org. All Houston Methodist hospitals are on this list: Baytown, Clear Lake, Medical Center, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, West, and Willowbrook. Memorial Hermann, Sugar Land also made this prestigious list.
“Preventable medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections in hospitals kill upwards of 200,000 people every year, the third leading cause of death in the United States, said Chris Skisak, PhD executive director of HBCH. “We are proud of the 12 of hospitals in the Houston area that earned an A. We will continue to work with our community, our members and our hospital leaders to make sure patients always come first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventing medical errors and patient harm. It is updated biannually in the fall and spring, offering the public a reliable, independent assessment of hospital safety. The Grades are determined by public, peer-reviewed methodology, calculated by top patient safety experts under the guidance of a National Expert Panel. The grading system is fully transparent and always freely available to the public at hospitalsafetygrade.org.
“We applaud the hospitals in Houston that have earned an A Hospital Safety Grade.” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Congratulations to the staff, volunteers, leaders, Board and all the clinicians who work so hard for their patients.”
