Katrina Daniel
Chief Health Care Officer
TRS of Texas

 

Katrina Daniel joined the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) in 2015. As Chief Health Care Officer for TRS, she oversees the TRS-Care and TRS-ActiveCare health plans, which cover nearly 750,000 lives and spend nearly $4 billion on health care each year.
Previously, Ms. Daniel was Senior Associate Commissioner for the Texas Department of Insurance Life, Health and Licensing Division, spending a decade regulating $82 billion life and health insurance market in Texas, as well as licensing over 30,000 insurance agents and adjusters. She has extensive state government experience in health-related public relations, policy analysis and advising, project management, and research. She served as a legislative aide in the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate.

As a registered nurse, her wide-ranging background spans health care work from hospitals, universities and a law firm on the ground, to patient evacuation flights in the air. At the local government level, she was Chair of Travis County’s Central Health Board of Managers, overseeing a $300 million budget and the policymaking decisions of nine board managers, developing contract-based performance measures for health care providers, and fostering community partnerships for an integrated health care delivery system.

Ms. Daniel earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University and a Master of Science in Health Care Transformation from The University of Texas McCombs Business School and Dell Medical School. She also completed coursework for a Master of Public Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health.
Ms. Daniel has a passion for improving the quality of and expanding access to health care for all Texans.
She resides in Austin with her English Mastiff, Bruno.
